The Anti‑Festival Festival
Coachella weekend has never really been my scene. I’m too old, too pale, and too attached to sleeping in my own bed to spend three days in the desert surrounded by people young enough to think The Killers are “classic rock.” And if I’m being honest, I recognized maybe five names on the lineup this year — and that’s counting the ones I only know because their names pop up on the MSN homepage at work.
But with the Coachella 2026 livestream making it easier than ever to watch from home, this felt like the perfect year to finally pay attention. And for someone who grew up on alternative and new wave, the real draw wasn’t the headliners — it was DEVO, the Nine Inch Nails collaboration – Nine Inch Noize, and David Byrne.
So instead of packing sunscreen, electrolyte packets, and spending more for lodgin than my first car, my son Colton and I created our own festival at home. We called it Couchella — no wristbands, no dust storms, no $19 tacos. Just a reclining sofa, a big‑screen TV, and the luxury of watching a festival without standing, sweating, or fighting for space.
We even warmed up by watching the Artemis II splashdown live before transitioning into the DEVO livestream. NASA to New Wave in under ten minutes. Only at Couchella.
Friday Night: DEVO Still De‑Evolving Better Than Anyone
We kicked things off with the DEVO livestream, and honestly, it felt like the perfect way to start a festival weekend from home. The setlist was basically identical to when we saw them in November — the difference this time was that we had a much closer view and didn’t have to wait through pouring rain and a lightning storm to get it. Watching them in 2026, still leaning into the absurdity of modern life, felt like a reminder that they were always ahead of the curve. What can I say, I’m just a spud boy. Below is the link to my review of the Cosmic De-Evolution Tour and the weather delays.

Saturday Coachella 2026 Livestream: Nine Inch Noize Up Close
Saturday was the big one: Nine Inch Noize, the expanded NIN x Boys Noize collaboration that Colton and I had already seen live in Dallas. Watching it on the Coachella 2026 livestream — both weekends — was a completely different experience. The massive video screen, the angular wedge‑shaped stage, and the faceless dancers moving in and out of the shadows gave the whole thing a strange, futuristic atmosphere that worked surprisingly well on a big‑screen TV.
Mariqueen Maandig Reznor — Trent’s wife and longtime collaborator in their band How to Destroy Angels — joined for several songs, adding a cool, textural contrast to Trent’s vocals. Plus, I’m pretty sure that she was wearing Malificent’s headpiece on the first few numbers.
I’ve been listening to the new Nine Inch Noize album almost every day since it came out, so hearing those reworked versions performed again — even through a livestream — felt like revisiting something that’s already become part of my daily routine. This era of NIN has a precision and atmosphere that works whether you’re in an arena or sitting on a reclining sofa.
And because it’s Couchella, we didn’t have to elbow our way through a crowd or stand for 90 minutes on questionable desert terrain. We just turned up the volume, dimmed the lights, and let Trent do what Trent does best.

Sunday Morning: David Byrne, Tea, and Biscuits & Gravy
Sunday morning of Weekend Two, we queued up the Coachella 2026 livestream replay of David Byrne. There’s something surreal about watching Byrne perform while eating biscuits and gravy and sipping tea. He still moves like a man who knows something the rest of us don’t, and the whole set had that unmistakable Byrne energy — part performance art, part musical sermon.
Somewhere around the second song I decided I want a matching blue outfit like the rest of his band. I was a little disappointed they didn’t have oversized coats like in Stop Making Sense, but the uniform look still worked and blue is my favorite color. It was the perfect cooldown to the industrial chaos of Saturday night.
The Surprise Discovery: Laufey
One of the unexpected joys of watching the Coachella 2026 livestream and highlights was stumbling across artists I’d never really listened to before. Laufey was the standout for me – what a voice. It’s the kind of discovery that reminds you why festivals matter, even if you’re watching from a couch instead of a field. I’ve actually listened to her latest album a few times since and definitely am a fan now.
The Comforts of Couchella
A few highlights of our homegrown festival experience:
- No dust storms
- No sunburns
- No 20-minute walk from the parking lot
- No overpriced food
- No crowds
- No aching feet
- No need to pretend I know who half the lineup is
- Actual sleep
Honestly, it’s hard to beat.
Looking Ahead: Darker Waves 2026
The irony of all this? Colton and I are going to a real festival this year — Darker Waves in November, which will be only my second festival ever and my first in over 20 years. It’s the perfect lineup for someone who grew up on New Wave and alternative music, and it feels like the right moment to dip my toes back into the festival world.
But until then, Couchella has set a pretty high bar. I may not survive a real Coachella weekend, but Couchella? I’m built for that.
